宋經元，1969年生，籍貫湖北當陽，中藥資源學專家，藥用植物研究所研究員，博士生導師。1987年考入北京農業大學（現中國農業大學）植物生理生化專業，1991年獲學士學位。1995-1998年、1999-2002年在北京協和醫學院生藥學專業攻讀碩士和博士學位，從事中藥生物技術研究。1998年升為助理研究員。2004年進入美國北卡羅萊納州立大學進行博士后研究，主要研究植物功能基因組。2006年升為副研究員。2011年升為研究員。2016年作為高級研究學者赴哈佛大學醫學院訪問。

藥用植物功能基因組，結構基因組與生物信息分析，細胞培養與活性成分生產調控，中藥DNA條形碼鑒定等。
